Writer/Director | Tiffanie Hsu

Tiffanie is an award-winning filmmaker whose passion for storytelling traverses many media, from film to animation to theater. Her animated short film, THREE BEAUTIES, won the Thomas T. Hoopes Prize, Harvard’s highest accolade for undergraduate work. Professionally, Tiffanie began her career working in China and Taiwan as a director’s assistant in feature film, first for international performer Leehom Wang on his directorial debut LOVE IN DISGUISE (2010), and then for Ang Lee on LIFE OF PI (2012). Upon completion of Pi, Tiffanie directed her first live-action short film with AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women. SUTURES (2014) starred Tzi Ma and Lynn Chen and has won several awards, including AFI’s Jean P. Firstenberg award and Best Short at the Asian American International Film Festival.

As an MFA candidate at UCLA, Tiffanie is a recipient of the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship, a premier graduate school fellowship that offers its fellows $90,000 of academic support. Her latest short film WONDERLAND (2016) stars Joan Chen and debuts her daughter, Audrey Hui. The film tells the story of a young girl stranded in Las Vegas struggling to keep her mother’s gambling under control all for the promise of a perfect family Christmas once her father arrives. The film was awarded the Jury Award at UCLA’s Director’s Spotlight Screening at the DGA theater and will premiere at the Hawaii International Film Festival in November 2016.

Currently, Tiffanie is directing a feature documentary funded by the Swarovski Foundation about women and children’s struggle with water along the six major rivers of the world. She is also developing a feature adaptation of WONDERLAND and shooting her thesis film in 2017.
